Welcome to the Woodhaven Bands webpage.  We hope that you will use this page to find out about our Woodhaven Band family, including the most up-to-date information on our programs.  Use the links below to check out our page.

About the Bands

The Woodhaven Bands are comprised of seven performing ensembles, whose membership is made up from students, grades 9-12, of Woodhaven High School and Patrick Henry Middle School, located in Brownstown, Michigan.  The Woodhaven Bands have a long-standing tradition of performance excellence from each of these ensembles, and are proud of the accomplishments of our outstanding student musicians and performers. The seven unique ensembles that students may perform in are: Concert Winds, Symphonic Band, Swing Shift (Jazz Ensemble), Warrior Marching Band, Woodhaven Percussion, and the Woodhaven Elite.

The two concert ensembles, Concert Winds and Symphonic Band, are open to any student of Woodhaven High School.  Concert Winds, the audition-based festival band, is intended for the most advanced musicians at WHS.  They perform a select repertoire of advanced band compositions, and have performed at a number of local and national events and festivals.  Symphonic Band has an open enrollment, so students of all levels of ability can participate.  This large ensemble performs a wide range of works for concert band, and performs at a number of local functions annually.  The two ensembles combined in 2004 to perform the world premiere of "Fantasia on An Early Hymn (1625)" by Michigan composer Mack Pittard.  "Fantasia" was commissioned by the Woodhaven Bands and the Woodhaven Band Boosters, in memory of Doug Allen, a percussion instructor of the bands, that passed away in 2002.

Swing Shift, the select jazz ensemble, is made up of 20 students from PHMS and WHS.  They offer music in a variety styles, including swing, blues, rock and latin.  They have performed at numerous local and national festivals, and have performed with such jazz greats as Maynard Ferguson, Mike Vax and Carl Saunders.

The Woodhaven Warrior Marching Band is the largest single group, team, or club in the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District.  They compete as a member of the Michigan Competing Band Association, and were a State Finalist in 2010 and 1994.  They perform at parades, football games, fundraisers, pep assemblies, and compete in a variety of invitationals and festivals throughout the United States. including Bands of America Regional Championships and Disney Magic Music Days.

Woodhaven Percussion and Woodhaven Elite are offshoots of the Warrior Marching Band.  Woodhaven Percussion allows students the opportunity to perform concert and marching style percussion compositions and arrangements.  Woodhaven Elite was founded to reinforce color guard techniques learned in the marching season, and to recruit new members to the color guard. Both groups are open to any student at PHMS or WHS.  All groups compete in the Michigan Color Guard Circuit.  Woodhaven Percussion was the gold medalist at the 2008, 2009 and 2010 MCGC State Championships.

And we are most proud of our Woodhaven Band Boosters.  This dedicated group of parents and friends are the reason why we are able to do what we do.  Their primary focus is to assist in the administration of many facets of the band program, including organizing events, planning trips and camps, updating and caring for inventories, preparing meals, and fundraising.
